Hols With HellieUSA Trip 2005 августа 10 RandomnessWanted a page for the random quotes, phrases, thoughts etc., which have been scribbled at the back of my travel journal; lemme know what you think, and I'll keep posting them up!!
"SHHHH! That's the sound of nobody listening to me..." (one someone's t shirt)
"I'm so broke I can't even pay attention." (On t shirt)
" if you can't stop, wave as you pass by.' (on diner sign next to interstate)
"I was lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory" (on t shirt)
"Everyone's someone in Luckenbach" -(their motto)
"Albuquerque Turkey" (radio ad - needs to be said real fast!) 9th August 2005 Durango/Mesa Verde/4CornersHey all. Once again logged on in the Steaming Bean, near 9th St, Main Avenue (mysteriously not Street here) in Durango. Drove out to Mesa Verde (for anyone who doesn't do Spanish it translates as Green Table) it is a HUGE Mountain just beyond a small town called Cortez, near Durango - another lovely little town. Climbed down the track to Spruce Tree House but drew the line at the 40 ft ladder for one of the others! Did climb dowbn the small ladder there into their underground ceremony room. How hot at the top of those cliffs?! Saw some of the others fom viewpoints such as CLiff Palace. Incredible to see, knowing that in 1200 and 1300 AD the native Indians had the knowledge and skills to find ways up to the Mountains and cliffs to create their dwellings. Some of them are very intricate too. They literally would climb up using picks to create foot and hand holes in the rock face. Then they farmed on the higher level on the very top of the cliff. I think we could learn a lot form them. There is a lovely quote about the lessons we can learn in the book dad bought - I'll post it up later as it's in hotel room....... Saw a deer as we came back down, it shot across road and ran up the vertical rock cliff face - wow! Next we drove out to FOur Corners; Mum and Dad weren't super keen but was pnlt 30 min or so further on so we headed out. Was lovely to see it still belongs to the Navajo Hopi Indians...they charge $3 a person, I thought that very reasonable; parents didn't lol. Least they are now after all these years of being cheated out of their land - think Custer in Montana - they have land which is theirs and is special....They have stalls instead of gift shop, selling handmade jewellery - I bought a lovely turquoiuse and black ring; a nice memento of having been in four states at once. Decided to do it properly and aquatted with feet and hands each in different section of the square so I was indeed in 4 states - Arizona, New Nexico, Colorado and Utah. So I can now cross Utah off my 'been in' list too!!! The heat in the four corners area was the most intense I've ever felt...... I am loving this area of Colorado - it is even more stunning than Denver in many ways...... Heading to Old TImer's cafe tonight in hopes of Cobb Salad!!! Looks like rain starting.... Gonna start my randomness page off next and will add to it soon...... Love H XXX NB Got the Cobb Salad and it was lovely!! Plus Margarita of course! Then had Starbucks/ Cold Stone Creamery fat free ice cream. Bxers- ppl with a dog who I ended up talking to took one of my books I'd left on table - hope they journal it! Was funny listening to them discuss it! августа 09 8th AugI'll add more later but had stunniong drive today out to Durango - Tommy - yes, I'm in your hometown and I LOVE it so much!!!!
